Styling Secrets with Colette: The Power of the 3-5-7 Rule

Styling Secrets with Colette: The Power of the 3-5-7 Rule

When it comes to styling your home like a pro, Lily Bloom’s own Colette Hickey has one go-to trick she swears by: the 3-5-7 Rule.
In this interview-style feature, Colette shares how she uses this simple design principle to create polished, welcoming interiors—whether she’s styling a client's console table, a chic Gorey home, or our in-store displays.

💬 "It’s the easiest way to make a space look styled without trying too hard," Colette says. "People overthink it—but once they try grouping in threes or fives, it just clicks."

How does the 3-5-7 rule work?

"It’s all about odd numbers," Colette explains. "Three, five, or seven pieces arranged together always look more natural. The eye moves across them more easily. It creates a little visual rhythm that just works."

She often recommends the technique for:

  • Console tables

  • Mantelpieces

  • Kitchen islands

  • Dining centrepieces

  • Bedside tables

"It’s especially handy when you’re not sure where to stop. If something looks off, chances are it’s because you’ve used an even number."

Colette Recommends: Styling in Threes

"Let’s say you’re working with a console table or a hallway nook. One of my favourite setups lately uses the Belgrave Mirror—it has that beautiful leafy detailing that brings both elegance and texture," Colette says.
"Then I pair it with the Elouise Lamp—it has such a gorgeous silhouette and brings in that soft, ambient light."

To complete the trio?

"I often add a stack of our Black and White Books—they’re decorative but timeless, and they ground the whole look."

This combination of reflective surface, sculptural lighting, and monochrome styling elements creates an effortlessly chic display—styled in 3, just as Colette recommends.

Styling in Fives: When You Want More Impact

"In dining rooms, I love a slightly fuller arrangement. A statement mirror like Pembroke over the sideboard sets the tone. Then I might add two Cleo Lamps and a Savoy Glassware Set for sparkle. I’ll finish it off with a centrepiece like our Faux Olive Tree or a tray of candles."

Seven-Piece Magic: Styling a Mantel

"If you’re feeling a little braver," Colette smiles, "seven-piece styling is where it gets fun."

Her go-to setup?

  • The Leeson Mirror as the anchor

  • Two vintage candlesticks

  • A quirky statement lamp like Mila the Rabbit

  • A floral arrangement

  • A couple of coffee table books

  • A little decorative trinket

"Seven pieces, styled right, can tell a full story on your mantel."

Style Support from Lily Bloom

"A lot of customers send me a photo of their space via WhatsApp. That’s how we start," says Colette.
"Then we build out a custom 3-5-7 styling plan. Sometimes they’ll come into the shop with a video of their room—other times, I’ll do a virtual consult or even a home visit."

And the best part? Styling sessions are fully redeemable against future orders.
